چکیده
The disruption of memory formation in goldfish with inhibitors of protein synthesis suggests a possible connection between proteins and memoryL Although drugs are convenient tools for an indication of such a relationship, the demonstration of proteins directly involved in the memory process would provide more direct support for this concept. We have previously studied protein metabolism of the goldfish brain based on the incorporation of labeled amino acids into the TCA-precipitable fraction'~L In this paper we present data on proteins fractionated with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, in conjunction with a method for the direct autoradiography of gels and with an enzymatic study of acetylcholinesterase (ChE). Results obtained under various conditions of training are compared. While reports from other laboratories have indicated changes in RNA13,26, '~s or protein ~,17 labeling in various species as a result of training, the present study does not reveal detectable chemical alterations in soluble proteins of the goldfish brain as a result of training.

The metabolism of brain RNA has been the subject of several recent investigations 7,t6-19,27. Interest stems in part from reports of changes in amount of total brain RNA under various functional stresses4,Z6, ao, changes in labeling patterns or in base ratios in individual brain cells with training13,14 and from studies showing that various antimetabolites block memory formation2,5,10. Goldfish optic nerve as well as ganglion cell neurites grown in culture selectively bind rhodamine-labeled alpha-bungarotoxin following tissue fixation. Binding is competed for by unlabeled bungarotoxin, by carbamylcholine and tubocurarine, but not by atropine. In cross-sections, the label is seen confined to axonal bundles. The binding is not detectable without prior fixation and is very faint...
متن کاملEffect of Prenatal Stress on Offspring's Learning, Memory and Coping Strategies
Introduction: The prenatal stress is a key factor which affects the growth and function of the brain. Several studies have shown that prenatal stress induces deficits in learning and memory of the offspring. The prenatal stress alters the activity of neurotransmitters, such as noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin, via over-activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. In addition, the...
متن کاملReview on Brain Decellularization Methods and their Applications for Tissue Engineering
Introduction: Tissue engineering by using decellularized tissues has been attracted attention of researchers in the regenerative medicine. Extra cellular matrix (ECM) is a secretory product of cells inside the tissues with supportive and regulatory function for homing cells. ECM contains glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and fibrous proteins. Each particular tissue has its unique ECM, especially brain,...
متن کاملRelease of RNA from goldfish brain nuclei by sodium dodecyl sulfate.
Intracranial injections of antimetabolites which block protein or RNA synthesis have been shown to prevent formation of memory of shock avoidance in the goldfish (Agranoff et al., 1967). Correlative studies carried out in this laboratory have shown the presence in the goldfish brain of RNA molecules which become labeled soon after intracranial injection of tritiated uridine (Casola and Agranoff...
